Are you looking for a minimally invasive option to refresh your skin and reduce visible signs of aging? A chemical peel may be the right treatment option to help you address your skincare concerns and achieve your aesthetic goals. VITAHL Chicago offers a wide range of chemical peel options to accommodate all your skincare needs. Our experts at VITAHL Chicago will recommend the strength and type of peel based on your individual skin care needs and aesthetic goals.

How do chemical peels work?

Chemical peels are made up of varying strengths of medicated solutions and applied to the skin in layers. Once the appropriate strength and type of peel for your skin has been determined, our experts will apply a medicated solution to your skin and let it sit for a short amount of time. Once the solution has been properly absorbed by the skin, the peel is neutralized. Over the next several days the outer layers of skin will flake and peel off to reveal the fresh, undamaged skin underneath.

What are the benefits of chemical peels?

Chemical peels offer you a minimally-invasive way to address a wide variety of skin concerns — including age spots, sun damage, wrinkles and fine lines — and improve the quality and texture of your skin. Chemical peels have relatively short recovery times and provide long-lasting results.

What symptoms and concern areas can chemical peels treat?

Because chemical peels can treat the entire surface of the skin and can penetrate the skin at various depths, they can treat a wide variety of symptoms and offer many improvements which include:

  • a reduction in fine lines under the eyes and around the mouth
  • a reduction in wrinkles caused by sun damage and aging
  • improvements in the appearance of mild scars
  • reduction in certain kinds of acne
  • reduction of age spots, freckles and localized discoloration (melasma) due to pregnancy or birth control pills
  • improvements in skin appearance and tone
  • improvements to areas of sun damage

Can I have a chemical peel procedure?

Candidates with fair skin and light hair typically see better results from chemical peel procedures than patients with darker skin and hair. However, patients with darker skin and hair can still have chemical peels with good results for some skin conditions. Individuals with darker skin and hair do run a slightly higher risk of having skin discoloration after a chemical peel procedure, as well. Your VITAHL cosmetic medicine specialist can recommend the optimal procedure to get the results you want, so have this discussion with them during your in-person consultation. If you are currently experiencing excessive skin laxity, deeper wrinkles or uneven skin (hollows and bulges), you will not make a good candidate for a chemical peel, but you do have other options to rejuvenate and improve these concerns.

What chemical peel procedures does VITAHL offer?

VITAHL Chicago offers three primary types of chemical peel treatments to meet most of our clients’ aesthetic concerns.

Glycolic Peel

Glycolic peels are made from glycolic acid derived from sugar cane and are the lightest of chemical peels. This peel exfoliates and keeps skin feeling refreshed. Glycolic peels can be performed weekly, and results can be maintained with regular treatment.

Potential side effects can include a slight burning sensation or redness immediately following treatment; both should subside quickly. Glycolic peels can also make skin more sensitive to the sun.

V.I. Peel and V.I. Plus

A modified version of the Jessner peel, the V.I. Peel and V.I. Plus work to correct sun damage, fine lines, acne, melasma and mild wrinkles. The V.I. Plus peel also targets hyperpigmentation, reduces the appearance of age spots, brightens skin and smooths uneven textures. These peels are safe for all skin types and are formulated to refresh aging skin and to help prevent future damage. Results are usually visible after one treatment.

Potential side effects can include some mild redness and increased sensitivity to the sun following treatment.

Trichloroacetic Acid (TCA)

Compared to glycolic peels and the V.I. Peel and V.I. Plus, trichloroacetic acid (TCA) peels penetrate deeper into the skin and work to address deeper signs of aging. One of the strongest chemical peels available, TCA peels can be used to treat hyperpigmentation, mild to medium wrinkles, actinic keratosis, melasma and superficial acne scars. Results are usually visible after one treatment. If using a TCA peel to address a specific concern, treatments can be performed every four to six weeks based on the skin condition.

Potential side effects can include some redness during the peeling process and increased sensitivity to the sun. Our experts at VITAHL Chicago will advise you on how to best protect your skin as it peels.

How long before I see results from my chemical peel?

After your chemical peel, you will likely experience symptoms similar to a sunburn. These symptoms on average take between two and seven days to resolve, and if you have had a deeper peel, your symptoms may require between seven and 14 days to resolve. During the days immediately following your procedure, you may also need to wear protective bandages over the treatment area to ensure your results. Once your skin has completed the initial, natural healing process, you can begin to enjoy your results, minimized and improved concerns and younger, fresher, more youthful-looking skin.

How long will my results last?

Some factors will affect your results, including your skin type and the severity of your initial symptoms. However, on average, you can expect to enjoy between one and two months of significantly improved skin quality from a single light chemical peel treatment, and between two and six months of rejuvenation from a deeper chemical peel. Follow-up treatments will often be necessary to maintain your results.
