Do you perspire more than most people? Do your hands or feet perspire excessively? Does this problem cause you additional stress or embarrass you in work or social settings? You are not alone. You may have a condition called hyperhidrosis, where your nervous system causes your body to overproduce perspiration involuntarily. You may not know that this condition can be successfully treated, but you have options to help you put this inconvenient occurrence behind you.

At VITAHL Chicago, we commonly use Botox® to help our patients address excessive perspiration. Botox® — a safe and well-understood neuromodulator — can treat more than just dynamic wrinkles. Botox® has been used extensively in the treatment of cosmetic concerns for decades, safely and with great results. This minimally-invasive treatment also allows our patients to enjoy an almost immediate reduction in perspiration without downtime or recovery, allowing you to quickly enjoy your life without having to worry about embarrassing perspiration.

What is hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis is a condition in which the sympathetic nervous system causes an overactive perspiration response. This involuntary condition can be socially isolating because individuals who suffer from it may feel embarrassed or insecure about their excessive perspiration. There are two different forms of hyperhidrosis: primary hyperhidrosis and secondary hyperhidrosis. The exact cause of primary hyperhidrosis is unknown, but it seems to be an inherited trait that is linked to genetics. Secondary hyperhidrosis occurs as a result of an underlying medical condition or medication. Alcoholism, for example, can contribute to excessive perspiration.

How can Botox® be used to reduce excessive perspiration?

Botox® is a common treatment option for hyperhidrosis. The botulinum protein found in Botox® binds to the nerve endings near the injection site, temporarily blocking the chemical signals from the nerves and preventing them from triggering a response from the perspiration glands. The same action keeps nerves from activating the facial muscles that lead to facial lines and wrinkles. Many patients experience a noticeable reduction in perspiration within one week once they have had their Botox® injections.

What are the benefits of Botox® for excess perspiration?

Botox® can significantly reduce the amount of perspiration your body produces in those areas most commonly affected by this problem.

What are the potential side effects?

The potential side effects of Botox® used to treat perspiration are the same for Botox®, and they can include swelling or tenderness, headache, bruising and mild pain or discomfort where injected. Most side effects are mild and should reside within a day or two of treatment.

What symptoms and concern areas can Botox® treat?

Botox® can reduce perspiration in the palms, feet and underarm areas as well as other areas affected by excess perspiration. Treatment of the palms can be more painful than treatment of other areas. However, you can still have your palms treated with a local anesthetic applied before having Botox®.

Am I a candidate?

Men and women who are looking to reduce excessive perspiration in their hands, feet and other areas are potential candidates for Botox® for perspiration treatments. Before your injection session, Dr. Humes will discuss your goals of treatment with you and review your medical history and general health to determine if this is the best treatment method for you.

What will happen during my Botox® treatment?

Once you have arrived at VITAHL Chicago for your treatment, your doctor will show you to a procedure room, have you relax and begin cleansing the procedure areas. If you have sensitive skin, your doctor may administer a topical anesthetic before your procedure for your comfort during and after treatment. If you don’t want anesthesia, you do not have to have it during your Botox® procedure.

After your doctor has measured your injections, they will use a small needle to give you precise amounts of the neuromodulator in your concern areas. The number of concern areas being treated and the severity of your symptoms will determine how many injections you will need to get your desired results.

When will I see results from my Botox® treatment?

You will likely begin experiencing the benefits of Botox® within 24 to 48 hours of your treatment; however, some patients do not see the full results of the treatment until two weeks after treatment. Improvements to your symptoms can continue for up to one month.

How long will my results last?

Botox injections typically help reduce excessive perspiration for six to nine months. To maintain your results, you will need routine follow-up injection sessions every few months to maintain your results. Consult with your VITAHL Chicago cosmetic specialist to determine the right follow-up schedule for you.
