VITAHL Medical Aesthetics Chicago offers a wide range of skin renewal options like Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) photofacials to help restore your natural beauty and correct damage caused by the sun. This light-based therapy can help improve the look and feel of your skin in short treatment sessions with minimal downtime.
What are Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Photofacials?
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) photofacials are a non-invasive skin rejuvenation treatment that can restore a patient’s natural beauty with limited downtime. Treatments consist of specifically designed light pulses customized to the patient’s specific skincare needs. The light pulses are absorbed by the pigmented spots on the skin and the heating of the pigmented cells causes the pigment to break up. Heavily freckled skin and pigmented spots in discrete areas typically respond well to treatment. Multiple treatment sessions may be necessary to achieve desired results. Results may vary depending on condition.
How do IPL Photofacials work?
IPL photofacials are a multi-step process. First, the designated treatment area is thoroughly cleansed to aid with absorption. Then a photosensitive medication is applied to the skin and left to penetrate the skin. The treated area is then exposed to specific wavelength of light activating the photosensitive medication which destroys the damaged skin cells by targeting the hemoglobin and melanin in the vascular lesion. The light energy is then converted to heat, clearing the lesions from the skin.
IPL Photofacials Treat:
- Sun damage
- Age spots
- Dilated blood vessels
- Brown spots (hyperpigmentation)
- Facial redness caused by broken capillaries
- Certain types of lines and wrinkles

What areas can be treated?
Essentially anywhere on the body with sun damage, age spots, and/or freckles can be treated. The most popular treatment areas are the face, shoulders, chest, and arms as these areas typically experience the most sun exposure.
How long do treatment sessions last?
Treatment sessions typically last about 15 to 30 minutes and can easily be scheduled during lunch hours. VITAHL Chicago generally recommends three to five treatment sessions spaced four weeks apart.
What can I expect during treatment?
VITAHL Chicago will provide you with protective eyewear to protect yourself from the intense light delivered during the treatment. Topical anesthetics are not necessary for IPL Photofacials but you can discuss options during your consultation.
What can I expect post-treatment?
You may experience some slight redness similar to a sunburn immediately following treatment, this typically subsides within a day. The skin goes through the healing process after the procedure is over and the full effects of treatment will become evident over several days following your IPL Photofacial.
How long will the results last?
Treated spots will lighten or disappear, but new spots can always appear. We recommend liberally applying sunscreen when outdoors to keep sun damage and the appearance of new spots to a minimum.
